Delia I Shulstad

Mrs. Delia Dede Shulstad, 95, a resident of the Barnesville/Comstock area for more than 80 years, died peacefully on February 21, 2012, at Essentia Hospital in Fargo. Mrs. Shulstad was born in 1916, in Saskatchewan, Canada, the middle child of parents Milla (Askegaard) and George Stensrud. In her youth she moved to Comstock, Minnesota to live with her aunt Delia (Askegaard) and uncle Hugh Trowbridge and attend public school. After graduating from Comstock High School in 1934, Mrs. Shulstad attended St. Johns Nursing School, Fargo, from which she graduated in 1937. She worked at Fergus Falls Community Hospital until her marriage to Arvid Bud Shulstad in 1941. Mr. and Mrs. Shulstad were married for 55 years and farmed together outside of Barnesville until his death in 1996. Mrs. Shulstad loved her family, friends and community, and this love was reflected in all aspects of her life. She was very civic-minded and supported many school, community and county-wide causes often anonymously. She enjoyed church fellowship, working in her garden, and serving as an auxiliary member of the Good Samaritan Home in Barnesville. Until the last year of her life, she lived independently in Barnesville and always retained, in the words of one of her daughters, a wonderful curiosity about life . Mrs. Shulstads survivors include three children: Craig (Mariana) Shulstad of Minneapolis; Karen (Larry) Seitz of Silver Spring, Maryland; and Connie (Charles) Levens of Redding, California; three grandchildren: Paul Nelson, Sara Shulstad, and Matthew Shulstad; and a special son, Yahya (Soraya) Anwar and grandsons Fahim and Tameem Anwar.
