Mabel Braton, 100, died at the Pelican Valley Nursing Home in Pelican Rapids, MN on Thursday, March 28, 2013. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM, Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at St. James United Church of Christ in Barnesville, MN with Pastor Wendy Ward officiating. Burial will follow in the Prairie View Cemetery, Prairie View Township, Wilkin Co, MN. Visitation will be held from 5-8 PM, Monday, April 1, 2013 at Dobmeier Funeral Home, Barnesville, MN with a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to the funeral service at the church on Tuesday. Mabel Peterson was born on March 20, 1913 on a farm in Wilkin County, near Lawndale, MN. She was born to Aseus K. and Mary (Larson) Peterson. She had 3 brothers and 4 sisters. She attended all eight grades at Dist. #3, a country school in Wilkin Co. She then spent four years at Fergus Falls High School and graduated from Moorhead State College with a two year Advanced Rural Teaching Degree in 1933. She taught four years in rural schools before marriage. She married Loren Braton at her parents home June 24, 1937. They had three daughters and two sons. They lived on the farm until 1977 when they bought a house in Barnesville and lived there 14 years. They moved to an apartment in 1991. In 2009, they moved to Riverfront Manor in Pelican Rapids. Mabel served as secretary for the Church Board at United Church of Christ in Barnesville. She also served on the Wilkin Co. Cancer Board for two years and on Ssiter Kenney Institute Board as Chairwoman in Wilkin Co. She belonged to the MN Federation of Womens Clubs for 32 years, where she served as secretary for four years in District #9. She also bowled on two leagues for 30 years. She reorganized a Homemakers Club which was active for 25 years. She held all offices in Womens Guild at St. James UCC. She enjoyed quilting, crossword puzzles, traveling and watching sports. She enjoyed the Minnesota Vikings but her favorite team was the Minnesota Twins. Mabel is survived by children: Mary (Erv) Ehrmann; Marlys (Gary) Carlson, all of Pelican Rapids, MN; Loretta (Dick) Lien, Fort Collins, CO; Llyal (Eileen) Braton, Barnesville, MN; Byron (Erleen) Braton, Osseo, MN; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Art Peterson, Barnesville, MN; sister-in-law, Inez Braton, Barnesville, MN; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 2012, two brothers Erl & Charles, four sisters: Mildred Youel, Agnes Olson, Florence Martin, and Elene Stone.
