Arlene S. Flaten, 62 of Barnesville, Minnesota formerly Hawley, Minnesota died Sunday, December 14, 2008, in the Good Samaritan Society, Barnesville. Arlene, daughter of Stanley and Ellen (Lindholm) Bell, was born July 14, 1946 on her family farm near Downer, Minnesota. She attended school and grew to womanhood in the Downer " Barnesville area graduating from Barnesville High School in 1964. She married Dennis Neuschwander in 1966. She later made her home in Detroit Lakes and worked for the Swift Turkey Plant in Detroit Lakes. Arlene married Ernest R. Flaten on August 17, 1974 in Gran Lutheran Church. Following the marriage, they made their home and farmed near Rollag where Arlene also ran a daycare out of her home for 15 plus years. She touched many young lives during those years, all of the children continued to be her pride and joy as they grew into adulthood. Following Ernies death in 1992, Arlene continued to live on the farm until 1996 when she moved into Hawley. For three years she worked for the Hawley Senior Living Center where she developed many friendships. Arlene became a resident of the Center in early November of this year. She moved to the Good Samaritan Society in Barnesville on November 28, it was there that she lived until the time of her death. Arlene was a member of Gran Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid. She enjoyed reading, visiting with friends and she loved to bake, especially for the holidays. She cherished moments with family and friends and she thoroughly enjoyed preparing and serving food and sharing fellowship at her church. Arlene is survived by two sons, Darin (Lynette) Neuschwander of Moorhead and Mike Flaten of Hawley; one granddaughter, Breana Neuschwander at home in Moorhead; one sister, Janet (Richard) Underdahl of Sauk Rapids, Minnesota and two nieces, Dawn (Steve) Rudy and Darla Gratke all of Sauk Rapids. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ernie; one sister, Joyce Enger and two brothers, Dennis and Swede. Memorial Services: Thursday, December 18, at 11:00 in Gran Lutheran Church, Skree Township, Clay County, Minnesota Burial: Gran Lutheran Cemetery.
