Service: 2:00 p.m. " Thursday, August 25, 2011, at Dobmeier Funeral Home, Barnesville, MN Clergy: Pastor Wendy Ward Burial: Rosemound Cemetery, Barnesville, Minnesota Lawrence Arthur Mundstock, 97 years old passed away on Monday, August 22, 2011, at Sunnyside Care Center in Lake Park, Minnesota. Formerly from Barnesville, MN, Lawrence was born on the Mundstock family farm on December 5, 1913 to Charles and Rosa (Scheffler) Mundstock, both were immigrants from Germany. In recent years his family began tracing their family background to find out that his great grandparents, Ludwig and Wilhelmina Mundstock had lived in the Chaseburg, WI area, there had been no contact between the families until the 1980s. Last year his daughter and son-in-law went to Chaseburg and brought back pictures of the church which Ludwig was a charter member, along with headstone pictures of several family members and pictures of the area farmland. Upon seeing these pictures, Lawrence said I finally have roots . During his junior high school years the family lived in Fargo where he worked as a caddy for the Fargo country club. Lawrence always wondered how his life would have been different had the family remained in Fargo. As a young man he took over the family farm, first renting and later buying it from his parents. Lawrence and Charlotte (Hughes) were united in marriage on July 24, 1940. They began their farming with eggs and chickens, later changing to cattle and pigs. They retired from farming in the 1970s later moving to Barnesville in 1981. During his retirement years he sold insurance for the Parke Mutual Insurance Company. Lawrence was always a fisherman.there was always time to fish, summer or winter! He took pride in always wanting to learn something new. Reading and studying details was important to him. He has never passed up a good meal. Lawrence had a wonderful sense of humor, and wasnt afraid of laughing at himself. In his later years of life he became known as the old German by his family and close friends. He certainly earned the nickname of the old German as all of his grandparents along with his parents emigrated from Germany during the 1860s. His mother Rosa Scheffler Mundstock said she remembered coming over on the ship as a young girl. Lawrence participated in many local organizations including serving on the Board of Education for the Atherton Township School, St. James United Church of Christ mens groups/planning councils, adult leader in the Atherton 4-H club, FFA parent. He especially looked forward to the county fairs and MN State Fair. In retirement years he and Charlotte both joined the Red River Valley Sidebanders club (RR590) and a ham radio operator (KAQPJ). Lawrence was an excellent cook, his most known was the summer bar-b-ques of roasted chicken featuring his home made sauces. He could be found playing cards or pool until his eyesight failed. Lawrence and Charlotte moved to Moorhead in 1995 and enjoyed life in a new townhome until Charlottes passing in 2000. Later he moved to Park View Terrace apartments and in 2004 to Sunnyside Care Center. Lawrence is survived by his daughter Sarah (Greg) Hayes; grandchildren, Kyle (Lenora), Lori Jo and Jonae Mundstock, Valerie (Neil) Clemmer, John Hayes; great grandchildren, John (Jenni) Hintz, Taylor Mundstock and Rylee Hayes; great great grandchildren Ashlyn and Carsen Hintz. He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; son Walter and his wife, Margie Mundstock; brothers Edwin (Signe) and baby Garhard; sisters Anna (Thomas) Motschenbacher, Minnie (Claude) Garrison and Lillian (Leonard) Steinke.
