Arlene M. Holt, 85 of Barnesville, Minnesota died Tuesday, October 27, 2009, in the Good Samaritan Society, Barnesville. Arlene, daughter of Elmer and Emma (Hegge) Lyden, was born April 13, 1924 in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota where she attended school and grew to womanhood. She graduated from Pelican Rapids High School in 1942. She attended Moorhead State College for two years graduating in 1944 with an Elementary School Standard certificate. She spent the summers during this time working at Dunns Lodge near Pelican Rapids, and a paper mill in Minneapolis to help with college expenses. After college she taught in a two room school, District 182, near Underwood, Minnesota, grades 1 " 4. The next four years she taught near Pelican Rapids, Rothsay, and Barnesville. Arlene married H. Virgil Holt on January 25, 1947 in Sisseton, South Dakota. They bought a farm near Barnesville in 1951 where they raised their family. When the girls were young Arlene was a substitute teacher. She also worked on the potato harvester, and in the Potato Flake Plant in Barnesville. In 1964 she returned to teaching and spent the next 23 years teaching in Rothsay. In 1972 Arlene received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education. She retired from teaching in 1987. Arlene and Virgil continued to live on the farm until last month when they became residents of the Good Samaritan Society, Barnesville. She lived there until the time of her death. She is a member of St. James United Church of Christ, guild and circle. She is also a member of the ladies Auxiliary of V.F.W. Post 4628 and the American legion post 153. Arlene loved to teach. Her hobbies included crocheting blankets and needlepoint. She enjoyed playing cards, gardening, raising flowers and cooking. She and Virgil feed birds and enjoyed their presence. Arlene is survived by her husband, H. Virgil Holt of Barnesville; one daughter Vickie (Harold) Gaul of Austin, Minnesota; four grandsons, Jonathan (Michelle) Gaul of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, Dustin (Fianc, Stephanie Harmon) Gaul of Austin, Michael Minetor of Minneapolis , and Sean (Angie) Minetor of Andover, Minnesota; five great-grandchildren, Ashley, Michael, Cassandra Minetor of Minneapolis, Aiden Minetor of Andover, and Michael Gaul of Hopkinsville; one brother, Dale (Marilyn) Lyden of Underwood, Minnesota; one sister-in-law Delores Lyden of Pelican Rapids. She is also survived by many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Arlene is preceded in death by her parents; her daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Ric Minetor; her grandson, Casey Gaul; her sister, Corean (Guida) Anderson and her brother, Richard. Visitation: Friday from 4:00 " 8:00 with a prayer service at 7:00 in Dobmeier Funeral Home, Barnesville. Funeral service: Saturday at 11:00 in St. James United Church of Christ, Barnesville.
