Raymond Schindler

August 28, 1922 — April 12, 2016

Raymond, Schindler, 93, of Barnesville, MN died on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at ValleyCare and Rehab in Barnesville, MN.   Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM, Saturday, April 16, 2016 at Assumption Catholic Church in Barnesville with Father Gary LaMoine presiding.  Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Barnesville.   Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.      Raymond Christian Schindler was born on August 28, 1922 to August Adolf and Rose DeLima (Berthelette) Schindler in Vassar, Manitoba, Canada.  He was the fifth of seven children.  He grew up in Vassar to age 17, his family then moved to Barnesville to start a family farm.   He joined the US Navy in March 27, 1944 and served until May 4, 1946.  He served on a merchant ship as a gunner during WW II.  He returned home to Barnesville and picked up where he left off; farming with his dad.  He married Marlys Lynette Thrane on December 6, 1947 and made their home in rural Barnesville.  He continued to farm through his entire life and in later years with his son Wayne, until 1998.    In the wintertime he worked for the Western Fruit Company on the Railroad.  Ray loved to garden, watching and nurturing the seedlings through the growing season until harvest.  He enjoyed playing cards and reading.  In his spare time in the winter, he could be found ice fishing.   He is survived by his wife Marlys; four children:  Carol Halpern, Woodbury, MN; Wayne (Sue) Schindler, Barnesville; Janice Schindler, Woodbury, MN; Curtis Schindler, Barnesville, MN; 8 grandchildren:  John (Michelle) Bovy; Jennifer Halpern; John (Emma) Halpern; Patrick (Michelle) Schindler; Sarah (Cody Barnes) Schindler; Elizabeth Schindler; Aaron (Elizabeth) Schindler; Curtis Schindler; 7 great grandchildren:  Calvin, Lauren, and Annie Bovy; Nora and Jack Schindler; Grace Schindler and Addyson Barnes; two sisters:  Emma Randklev, Moorhead, MN and Mildred  Wohlwend, Barnesville; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.   He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters: Diane Schindler and Connie Olson; daughter-in-law Carol Schindler; four siblings: Charles Schindler, Floyd Schindler, Lillian (Joseph) Hovorka, and Madeline Vauclair; and two brothers-in-law:  Don Wohlwend and Lloyd Randklev.        Ray Schindler Funeral Program
