Clarice Orpha Larson was born on March 1, 1938, to Arthur and Orpha (Sillerud) Larson on the family farm in Humboldt Township, Clay County, MN. She grew up attending country school and Barnesville High School. While riding the school bus, she met Robert Softing and they were later married on October 26, 1954. They started their married life living on the Jansen Farm where Bob worked for the Jansen family. In 1955, their son Jeffrey was born. They then moved to Ulen, MN, for about a year. Then in 1957, Clarice and Bob lived in Fergus Falls, MN, where Clarice worked as a waitress in a cafe. In 1962, they moved to the Softing Farm near Rollag and took over the operations. Clarice was active on the farm and spent 21 years helping milk the dairy cows, along with the field work. She would drive the grain cart and made sure there was a meal to be eaten. Clarice was hard working and will be remembered as a good cook. She also was a great gardener, and especially grew and shared her wonderful raspberries. She was a housewife all her life, who would make lefse, baked, and sewing. Following retirement from farming, Clarice and Bob hit the tractor pull circuit and spent many hours collecting and restoring old tractors. Throughout her life, she was also active at Maranatha Church and the ladies aid groups.
Clarice is survived by her husband, Robert Softing of Dilworth, MN; one son, Jeff (Valerie) Softing of Fargo, ND; two grandsons: Greg Softing, of Moorhead, MN and Mike Softing, of Las Vegas, NV; and one brother, Arvid Larson of Moorhead, MN.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Carroll Larson.
