Freemont Ray Pender was born on February 7, 1956, to Howard Sr. and Evelyn (Kluck) Pender in Moorhead, MN. He grew up on their family farm located near Baker. He was active in 4-H and helping on the family farm. He graduated from Barnesville High School in 1974. He furthered his education for a few years, then he served his country in the US Army for four years. He then returned home to finalize his education at NDSCS in Wahpeton in 1983.

Freemont met Lori Kay Johnk and they were married on May 27, 1983. They built their life together on the family farm. In addition to helping on the family farm, he raised pigs, and did agronomy work for elevators in Glyndon, Sabin, and Lake Park. He also worked at Cargill in Wahpeton for 16 years. He then went to work at American Crystal Sugar in Moorhead for a couple of years, before his multiple myeloma diagnosis.

He was a highly active member of the Baker-Downer Westminster Presbyterian Church. He was known to be a go to person for guidance. He was also known for being a hardworking and thoughtful man. Freemont had many hobbies including hunting, fishing, or anything that got him outdoors. Tall tales were always sure to follow any of his adventures. He was an excellent husband and father. His true calling, being a grandpa, was found after his initial cancer diagnosis. He cherished his time spent with his family, but his grandkids most of all.
