Harris Duane Leverson was born on August 24, 1948, to Kenneth Amos and Irene Harriet (Romer) in Moorhead, MN. He was seventh of eight children. He grew up in Moorhead and graduated from Moorhead High School in 1967. Following high school, he served his country in the US Army during the Vietnam War. His tour of duty included Vietnam and Germany and he was honorably discharged August 19, 1971. He returned home and worked as a janitor at the Ramada Inn South Moorhead, MN, and the North Moorhead Standard Station.
He was married to Debra Braton in 1973 and to this union two sons were born, Nathan and Kenneth. Harris moved to the family farm and worked for his father-in-law on the dairy farm. They divorced in 1990, and Harris moved to Fargo, ND. He worked as a janitor in the federal building in Fargo, and then began working at Northwest Technical College in Moorhead for several years.
Harris suffered lifelong effects from Vietnam and was disabled in his late 50’s. In January of 2015, he suffered a life changing stroke. He lived with his son for some time, before moving to Sioux City, IA, where his sister Janice Peterson and niece Diane Prichard helped care for him.
During Harris’ lifetime he enjoyed bowling, playing horseshoes, cards, and dice. He also had a fun time gambling pull tabs and visiting the casino. Also, some of his hobbies included fishing, dogs, and he was an avid Minnesota Sports Fan following the Twins, Vikings, also liked NDSU Bison Football.
He is survived by two sons: Nathan (Chanda) Leverson of Barnesville, MN, Kenneth (Becky) Leverson of Pelican Rapids, MN, nine grandchildren: Abby Hough, Emily Leverson, Lindsay Christianson, Amber (Hunter) Gray, Mackinzie Leverson, Kaitlyn Leverson, Brayden Leverson, Viola Leverson, four great-grandchildren: Jack Hough, Serenity Hoffart, Emmitt Hoffart, Alice Nezirevic, six siblings: Kenny Leverson, of Mesa, AZ, Judy (Tom) Bacon of Vancouver, WA, Janice Petersen of Sioux City, IA, Karen Herman of Vancouver, WA, Kathy (Fred) Sigmund of Desert Palms, CA, Susan (Fred) Tilton of Albuquerque, NM, and several nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
Harris was preceded in death by his parents Kenneth and Irene, infant sister Mary Susan, daughter-in-law Lisa Riddering-Leverson, brother-in-law Dean Petersen, and sister-in-law Charlene Leverson.
Harris Leverson died on Saturday, July 8, 2023, with his family at his side at his sister Janice Petersen’s home in Sioux City, IA at the age of 74 years.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Friday, July 14, 2023, at Dobmeier Funeral Home in Barnesville, MN with Pastor Jim Wilson officiating. Harris will be laid to rest near his parents in the Hawley Cemetery, Hawley, MN.
Visitation will be Thursday 5-8 PM, at Dobmeier Funeral Home and for one hour prior to the funeral service on Friday.
