Janice (Jan) Hanson, 88, passed away peacefully on May 11th, 2026 with family by her side, at Valley Care & Rehab, Barnesville, MN. A memorial service will be held in her honor on Sunday, May 24, 2026, at 2:00 pm, at Dobmeier Funeral Home, Barnesville, MN. Public visitation will begin one hour prior to the service at 1:00 pm.
Jan was born on September 23rd, 1937, to Julian Arthur Hanson and Clara Alvehda Fredrickson in Barnesville, Minnesota. Jan spent her childhood in Barnesville and Dilworth, Minnesota. She graduated from Dilworth High School. After graduation, Jan moved to San Diego with her beloved friend Renie. Jan always reminisced about working at a movie theatre, waitressing, and going to beach parties. Eventually, she returned to Minnesota and met her husband, John Hanson. They married in 1959 and lived an adventurous life moving across the country with their five children. The family returned to Barnesville in the mid-1970s. Jan enjoyed time with her family and friends: playing card games, dancing, cooking, gardening, and laughing until she cried. She had a talent for crafts like crocheting and knitting. She loved to travel and be with her grandchildren. Her loved ones describe her as kind, fun to be around, and incredibly resilient.
Jan is survived by her 3 daughters: Lori Rivers Hanson, Sheila (Jeff) Cihak, and Julie Weibel; grandchildren: Keli (Michael) Craig, Matthew (Marisa) Cihak, Taylor Cihak, Lindsey (RJ) Buros, Morgan (Ryan) McCann, Ian (Rui) Barr and Alley Hanson; great-grandchildren: Quinn, Cole, Saylor, Joan and James; sister Elaine Welle; and many nieces and nephews.
Jan was preceded in death by her husband John Hanson; two sons: Steve and Jake Hanson; parents Julian and Clara; and siblings: Dale, Donna, Garen, Glenis, and Patty.
Jan’s family would like to send a heartfelt thank you to the Valley Care and Rehab staff where she happily presided for the past 8 years. Jan loved those who cared for her. She was treated like their mom, grandma, and friend. Also, thank you to Common Spirit Health Hospice Care for the comforting care they provided in Jan’s final days.
