Joan Thompson, age 80, of Moorhead, MN, formerly of rural Baker, MN, passed away peacefully with her sons and daughter-in-law at her side at the Farmstead Care Unit, Moorhead, MN, where she was in hospice care for a number of debilitating health issues.
Joan was born on May Day, 1940 and like the tradition of leaving something sweet and lovely at your neighbor's door, Joan was that gift to friends, acquaintances, and family throughout her life.
Born to John and Emma (Korus) Thimgan, in Fargo, ND, she graduated from Fargo Central High School in 1958 and then worked for the Fargo telephone company.
Joan met, then married the love of her life, Fred Thompson, on November 5, 1960, at St. John Lutheran Church, Fargo, ND. She then became a lifelong farm wife in rural Baker, MN, where they farmed with Fred’s brothers and family and later sons. Joan loved her role as a farm wife, becoming very involved in key aspects of their farming business.
In their "retirement" they annually enjoyed their many winter friends in Texas at Sun-N-Fun RV Park. Joan lost Fred to cancer in 2012 after 52 years of marriage. In 2016, she decided to leave the farm and move to an apartment in Moorhead, MN.
Creator of beautiful quilts and pottery, she enjoyed reading, music, and gardening. Her sweetness was balanced with her sense of humor.
She is survived by sons Perry (Janet) Thompson, Tappen, ND, and Jeff Thompson, Baker, MN. Grandchildren Andy (Holly) Thompson, Jamestown, ND, and Nicole (Terence) Erasmus, Carrington, ND. Great-Grandchildren Freddy and Anna. She is also survived by siblings Marlene (Rud) Wasson, Fergus Falls, MN, and Dan (Sandra) Thimgan of Battle Lake, MN.
Joan's family wants to particularly thank the angels of mercy at Farmstead Care who kept her comfortable and connected with family in her last days.
She was a lifelong member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Baker, MN. She would never miss those other holy days the Barnesville Potato Days or the Annual Fish Fry.
Memorial Service: 1:00 PM, Thursday, February 11, 2021 at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, Baker, MN. The service may also be attended virtually by the live stream box below. Please sign the online guestbook to let the family know you were there with them.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution in Joan's name to Farmstead Care (Moorhead) or Red River Valley Hospice (Fargo).
