Sanna Jane Petersen

Sanna Petersen, 87, of Barnesville, MN, formerly of Sacramento, CA, died on Monday, September 11, 2023 at KinderCare Assisted Living in West Fargo, ND. 

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Friday, September 15, 2023, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Barnesville, MN with Rev. Clay Ellingson officiating.  Burial will follow in Rosemound Cemetery, Barnesville.  

Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the funeral service at the church. 

Sanna Jane Solum was born on June 27, 1936 to Jorgen Solum and Ella Josephine (Fredrickson) Solum in Barnesville, MN.  She was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Barnesville, MN.  She attended school in Barnesville and was active in the band and gymnastics.  She graduated in 1954. 

In 1959, they went to visit a brother in California, and then decided to move to California.  Sanna found work with the telephone company and worked there for over 15 years.  While living in California, she met and married Dick Petersen in 1965 in Reno, NV.  Their first many years of marriage were in San Jose and Sacramento California. In 1987, Dick and Sanna moved to Barnesville, MN.  Sanna volunteered at the nursing home in Barnesville for over 20 years, bringing joy and comfort to the residents who lived there.  Leaving Barnesville about five years ago, she has lived at New Perspectives in Fargo, and for the last 2 ½ years has been a resident at KinderCare in West Fargo. 

Sanna also enjoyed golfing, dancing, traveling and cruising.  She loved caring and keeping connections with her grandchildren.  Dick and Sanna had a great life together and complimented each other.  Sanna will be remembered as a good listener with solid advice.  She treasured her friendships and made friends everywhere she lived.  She shared a special bond with her sister Lela and would talk every night ending with “I Love You.” 

She is survived by one brother Henry “Hank” (Patricia) Solum of Baker, MN, one sister Lela Solum of Barnesville, MN; two step daughters:  Christine (Dennis) Chance, Keizer, OR,  and Sharon Petersen, Wildomar, CA; four grandchildren:  Cary (Travis) Furrer, Gaston, OR; Philip (Kiffen) Chance, Escondido, CA, Sarah (Micah) Brown, Hampton, VA, and Rebecca (Gregory) Hatcher, Midlothian, VA; 11 great grandchildren, and few nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. 

She was preceded in death by her husband Dick in 2015, her parents, two brothers: Julian Solum and Marvin Solum. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Red River Valley or Our Saviors Lutheran Church.
