Vivian E Nicklay

Vivian Nicklay, age 87, of Barnesville, MN, died on Thursday, February 25, 2021, at Sanford Hospital in Fargo.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Monday, March 1, 2021, at Dobmeier Funeral Home in Barnesville, MN with Rev. Jim Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in Rosemound Cemetery, Barnesville, MN.

Visitation will be 9-11 am on Monday, at Dobmeier Funeral Home in Barnesville. While maintaining social distancing guidelines, we are now able to accommodate gatherings while abiding to a 50% capacity at the facility. The use of face masks by attendees is required at indoor events, and we will continue taking the necessary steps to keep your families safe. Expressions of sympathy during this time can be left on the condolences page available on the obituary portion on our website.

Vivian Ella LaFayette was born on August 15, 1933, to Alfred and Marie (Vandre) LaFayette in Clay County, MN. She grew up in Baker, MN and attended country school. When she was a young girl, her family moved into Barnesville. As a young woman she went to work in Fargo as a waitress in the Herbst Department Store. During this time, she also worked on the Butenhoff Farm working behind the potato picker.

On August 30, 1954, she was united in marriage to Bernard Arnold Nicklay at St. James United Church of Christ in Barnesville. They started their married life living in Barnesville, and later moved to a farm NE of town. They returned to town when they bought a house in 1985. During those years she worked for several years at the turkey plant in Pelican Rapids.

Vivian will be remembered for her superb cooking and her welcoming hospitality. She was an awesome grandma to her grandchildren. She was active in St. James Church, and supported the guild. Vivian was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 62 years and a member of the VFW Auxiliary for many years. She embroidered many dish towels and made many quilts for her children and grandchildren.

Vivian is survived by two sons: Gerald (Mary) Nicklay, New Ulm, MN and Roger Nicklay, Barnesville, MN; grandchildren: Cory Nicklay, Moorhead, MN, Katie Nicklay, Moorhead, MN, Bradley (Amber) Nicklay, West Fargo, ND and Ashley Nicklay, Hillsboro, ND; two great grandchildren: Nora and Anja Nicklay; a brother Dave (Francine) LaFayette, Champlin, MN; sister-in-law Doris LaFayette, Barnesville, MN; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Bernie in 2011, her parents, great granddaughter Quin, and two brothers: Lloyd and Clarence "Buck" LaFayette. Due to COVID-19 limitations and restrictions Vivian’s service will be live streamed and recorded for those who aren’t present. To watch the livestream go to the bottom of this page and it will begin at 11 AM, otherwise, if you wish to watch it later it will become available after 2 PM in the recorded format also on the bottom of this page.
